There’s a spiders nest in my garage. I’m not happy about it. It shouldn’t be there. So, this morning, I decided to do something about it and gave it a bit of a prod with a pen. It immediately ruptured and hundreds of tiny spiders emerged and quickly scurried off in all sorts of directions.
Before I did this, I didn’t have to worry about them too much. I knew the nest was there, of course, but all of the spiders were in the same place and sort of contained. Now, though, they’ve disappeared. I’ve literally no idea where any of them have gone.
All of which brings me to the government’s migrant accommodation strategy, which in part appears to be to drive down the use of hotels, and move migrants into houses of multiple occupancy (HMOs). I should also say that they are also moving migrants into ex-MOD sites.
Now, on a level, I support this. These ex-MOD sites were good enough to accommodate those brave men and women putting their lives on the line to protect our borders. It follows then, if a little ironically, that they’re absolutely fine to house people who violate those same borders by coming here illegally.
And fundamentally, moving migrants out of hotels and into HMOs should reduce accommodation costs compared to expensive hotels. This, of course, assumes the number of migrants that need to be accommodated doesn’t continue to rise, an assumption which is clearly nonsensical given the pull factors and lack of disincentives to travel.
The other issue is I’ve no doubt we’ll pretty quickly exhaust capacity at these military sites, which is presumably why we need to supplement this with the use of HMOs.
My main issue with the use of HMOs is one of transparency. We’ve got a reasonable grasp of where migrant hotels and ex-MOD sites are (you can see them on our homepage, here). In practice, I see the trend away from hotels and towards ex-MOD camps almost daily as I receive site updates. There are, however, far more HMOs than there are MOD sites. HMOs are smaller and they’re more embedded within our communities. They’re much less conspicuous.
The bottom line…
It’s my opinion, and probably a fact, that people in the community who were previously worried about a migrant hotel on their doorstep, are now even more concerned about an increase in the use of HMOs, largely because they’ve no idea who is now living amongst them. Even if members of the public had a right to know this, and the Home Secretary clearly doesn’t think we do, most of these migrants are undocumented. They’ve got no passports. No way of proving who they are. We’ve therefore got very few means of vetting them. And, much like all those spiders in my garage, we’ve now got no idea where they all are.

Hmmm, that’s quote thought-provoking. Is there any centralised list of HMOs I wonder? Presumably the government knows where they are (do they, though?) but I’m guessing they’re not about to publish a list of them any time soon.
Not that I’ve found, Roger 😴
